'I knew he could do it' - Hayden Wilde's mum celebrates bronze

From Checkpoint, 5:07 pm on 26 July 2021

New Zealand is on the scoreboard at Tokyo with its first Olympic medal - a surprise bronze in the men's triathlon, won by 23-year-old Hayden Wilde.

The young Bay of Plenty man, and relative newbie to the sport, was in tears after storming home in third place.

He said he 'fizzled' a bit in the second lap of the swim, but the Coast to Coast veteran conquered the 10km run with ease.

Back home, crowds of childhood friends and family were gathered at the Whakatāne Fishing Club. Hayden's mum Sarah Wilde Ennis told Checkpoint about the amazing moment.

"I'm having a good cry, I'm so happy, excited.

"I always had faith in him but there's always that moment of waiting and waiting and waiting. I knew he could do it. I just knew it."

She said when her son made the transition from the cycle stage to the run her confidence rose.

"I knew his run would get him somewhere."

Wilde Ennis said the roof nearly lifted off the club as 30 to 40 people celebrated his medal-winning performance.

Her son had worked incredibly hard since taking up the sport four years ago, she said.

"His goal was to get to the Olympics and he wanted to get a medal. That's what he wanted to do and he's got it."

When she got the chance to speak to him she would tell him she was proud of him.

She intended celebrating with a few drinks - supporters watching with her included his friends from primary school, work colleagues, family friends and relatives as well as her husband and son.
