Produce growers: going plastic free not the answer

From First Up, 5:50 am on 2 July 2020

Cardboard, compostable packaging or plastic? What's the solution?

While millions of people around the world have joined the Plastic Free July global movement - growers in the produce industry here say going 100 percent plastic free is not the answer.

The industry currently sees 6 million cardboard banana boxes shipped into New Zealand every year leaving a bigger carbon footprint than the reusable plastic crates its been using for the last 30 years.

Camera man Simon Rogers and Indira Stewart took Associate Environment Minister Eugenie Sage to visit New Zealand's oldest fruit and veggie market to hear from industry growers who argue plastic crates are environmentally and economically better.
