NZ - NY route difficulty underestimated by Air NZ - union

Air New Zealand's fledgling New York route has hit multiple speed bumps since its launch with both passengers and bags offloaded from different flights amid warnings strong headwinds could force the return flight to stop in Fiji to refuel. So has the airline under-estimated how logistically complicated the route is? What happens with cargo? And are crew staying within union-agreed working hours for the long-haul flight?
