'We could take 250' - Ghahraman discusses Manus

From Morning Report, 8:45 am on 8 November 2017

The lawyer for refugees and asylum seekers in Papua New Guinea will file an appeal after the Supreme Court rejected an application to restore power and water to the Manus Island detention centre. The centre was closed last Tuesday, but about 600 refugees indefinitely detained there by Australia are refusing to leave, as they say the alternative accommodation is not up to standard. People bringing food and water to the asylum seekers have been turned away from PNG authorities. New Zealand's offer to take 150 refugees a year was again refused by Australia at the weekend. One of the refugees, Abdul Aziz Adam, says the men are determined to stay in the centre at any cost, because they fear for their safety if forced to move into Lorengau town. Green MP Golriz Ghahraman escaped Iran as a child in 1990 and resettled in New Zealand with her family as refugees. She joins us to discuss the issue.
