Wahine ferry tragedy remembered, 50 years on

From Morning Report, 8:14 am on 9 April 2018

Fifty years ago tomorrow New Zealand's worst modern maritime disaster unfolded at the Wellington Heads. The Wahine had left Lyttleton the night before, carrying 734 passengers and crew and one stowaway. Storm warnings had been issued, but rough conditions weren't uncommon in the Cook Strait, so the captain made the decision to plough ahead. 53 people lost their lives.
