Police Association on officers taking photographs

From Morning Report, 7:25 am on 13 October 2022

The police minister is facing fierce criticism over his suggestion the Government may change the law to allow officers to keep taking photographs of adults and children for looking out of place or suspicious.

Chris Hipkins says the pendulum has swung too far in favour of privacy over surveillance.

His comments follow an investigation which found the police were routinely illegally taking photographs and storing thousands of images which should be destroyed.

Morning Report wanted to speak in further detail with Hipkins but he declined to be interviewed.

New Zealand Police Association President Chris Cahill spoke to Guyon Espiner.
