Dozens of people living at Waihi Beach north of Tauranga have spent the night with friends and family after evacuating their flooded homes yesterday.
60-millimetres of rain fell during a cloud burst just after two yesterday afternoon, and floodwaters were up to waist deep.
Civil Defence says most people evacuated had found accommodation with family and other members of the community for the night.
There has also been significant damage to the roading network in the region around Waihi.
