Emergency services say the Sims Metal scrap yard fire in South Auckland that has been burning for about 30 hours is almost out.

Three fire crews are still at the scene fighting the blaze, which prompted an emergency alert yesterday due to toxic smoke.

Fire and Emergency says the smoke has died down significantly, and expect the fire will be out at around 8am.

The ninth fire at the yard has raised questions over whether regulations for scrap metal yards are fit for purpose.

Auckland Council's General Manager of Licensing and Regulatory Compliance, Mervyn Chetty, spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.
