National Party deputy leader Nicola Willis was among three political leaders who made a surprising commitment at a debate last night to build a 1,000 state houses in Auckland each year.
Labour Party leader Chris Hipkins and Green Party co-leader Marama Davidson also agreed to do so.
The debate, which had over 500 attendees, was hosted by a newly formed alliance of community organisations called Te Ohu Whakawhanaunga.
