In this episode of Music Chairs Trevor Reekie talks to Auckland musician and self-confessed keyboard addict Nigel Russell. A member of influential 80s bands The Spelling Mistakes, Danse Macabre and Car Crash Set, Russell's passion for synthesizers has been the catalyst for numerous recordings and live performances.
Russell initially began his musical career in Auckland as a bass player for popular punk start-ups The Spelling Mistakes before joining old school friend, Weston Prince in the refreshed post-punk quartet Danse Macabre. The band enjoyed success with their 1981 EP Between the Lines, reaching #15 on the NZ charts while their album 'Last Request' also cracked the Top 40.
Following the demise of Danse Macabre, Nigel linked with the Greg Johnson Set, contributing to a couple of albums before forming the pioneering electronic sounds of Car Crash Set with the late Dave Bulog. A passionate live performer Russell continues to work in the music industry recording and releasing new material as Si Si Es.
