The Shanghai Mimi band will be bringing a slice of 1930s Shanghai to Auckland this weekend as they perform two shows as part of the Auckland Live Cabaret Season.
Led by beguiling frontwoman Sophie Koh, the group blends together Chinese folk and American jazz fusion in shidaiqu - or "songs of the era" - from a city where musicians from every corner of the world lived and worked.

Maurice Shadbolt was a trailblazer for professional writing in Aotearoa, and made a successful living from his novels and various non-fictional works. The Auckland Council recently voted to transfer the Titirangi house once belonging to Shadbolt to the Going West Trust.
Naomi McCleary from the trust says the goal now is raising enough money to rehabilitate the Shadbolt house with a view to establishing a writers' residency.
