A break in the weather is allowing rescuers to try to evacuate 31 trampers stuck in a hut on the Routeburn Track  this morning. The landslide hit the Howden Hit just after 1am, causing extensive damage to one side.

As many as 100 others from various huts in the area will also need to be evacuated. It comes as heavy rain in Fiordland has caused major problems in the area closing State Highway 94 with 190 tourists stuck in Milford Sound.

Local Mayor Gary Tong is at the Emergency Management Centre in Southland.
