NZ Live: Tiny Ruins

From NZ Live, 2:25 pm on 28 April 2023

Tāmaki Makaurau band Tiny Ruins has been a staple of our indie-folk scene since their first EP dropped in 2010.

This week, we recorded singer-songwriter Hollie Fullbrook and the band performing songs from their brand-new album Ceremony.

Most songs on the previous three Tiny Ruins albums relate to Hollie's personal life, she tells Jesse Mulligan, but Ceremony "runs a bit deeper".

She started working on what became the album's lyrics six years ago while Tiny Ruins were finishing their acclaimed 2019 album Olympic Girls.

"During that time I suffered from a miscarriage and dealt with that by writing lyrics without putting them to music. I just buried them in notebooks and it wasn't until two years later after we'd toured Olympic Girls and come home again that I unearthed them."

Around that time, Hollie and her partner had a child and the family moved to the West Auckland community of Laingholm, near where she grew up.

Back in February, Hollie spoke to Jesse about how walking around the Manukau Harbour with her two adopted dogs inspired her new songs.

Tiny Ruins played:

'The Crab / Waterbaby'

'In Light of Everything'

'Out of Phase'

'Earthly Things'

'Dorothy Bay'
