09.08 Coromandel faces clean up but more bad weather ahead

Conditions have eased on the Coromandel but the region will be moving into recovery mode after two days of wild weather. Heavy rain and high winds closed roads, cut power and brought down slips. The forecast predicts more stormy weather ahead. Anna speaks with Thames Coromandel District mayor Len Salt for an update on the conditions and the clean up ahead.

09:18 World sheep shearing record broken

A twenty year old world record for sheep shearing was finally broken this week in a Central North Island woolshed. Simon Goss and Jamie Skiffington have shorn a combined 1410 lambs in eight hours, breaking the record set two decades ago by another New Zealand pair.

It's 50 years since a little known Auckland art rock band - then called Split Ends - took to the stage and played at the country's first ever big music festival. The band later went onto be known as Split Enz and its history is being celebrated by Otago University's Hocken Library with a unique collection of memorabilia. Anna speaks to curator Amanda Mills.

09.40 Radio silence - Canterbury Mountain Radio ending service

For almost 60 years the Canterbury Mountain Radio Service has provided a lifeline to trampers and hunters in some of the most remote parts of the South Island. But later this year the service will close due to a funding shortfall, changing technology and a lack of volunteers. Ian Gardiner has been involved with the service for decades. He joins Anna to talk about why it's shutting down.

Shaun Barnett is a keen walker and photographer. He shares four of his favourite day walks from different parts of the country - Whangamumu Track in the Bay of Islands, Tarawera Falls at Lake Tarawera, Meretoto Ship Cove to Endeavour Inlet in the Marlborough Sounds, and Queenstown's Ben Lomond Track.

Our museum stop today is in the central Otago town of Arrowtown. The Lakes District Museum and Gallery tells the story of early Māori life in the region and outlines the pioneering days of the European settlers and goldminers. It incorporates three historic buildings and has just had an official reopening following a big seismic strengthening and restoration project. Museum director David Clarke tells Anna all about it.
