Doubts over Brazil's preparations for World Cup and Olympics

7:43 am on 27 November 2013

There are ongoing doubts over the ability of Brazil to host not only next year's football World Cup, but the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

Construction of several key stadiums for next year's football extravaganza continues to lag, and the country may have to move to 24 hour construction to get all the infrastructure ready in time.

Brazil have been set a deadline by world governing body FIFA to have all the match venues finished by the end of this year, but several stadiums are behind schedule, and one, Cuiaba, definitely won't be ready until mid-January at the earliest.

Some 14 infrastructure projects promised for the country as a result of hosting the World Cup have also been shelved completely, adding to criticism that the event's costing Brazil too much and not returning enough benefits to the people.

The BBC reports that that's arguably a bigger issue than having the football stadiums ready in time - and the Olympics may be more of a problem again for Brazil, as the Games are such an intricate event.

Good urban mobility links are the key to staging a successful Olympics, and that's set to be one of the key problems for the Latin American country in 2016.
