Hawkes Bay cyclist Regan Gough has won the 25-kilometre points race at the Junior Track World Championships in Korea.
Gough rode perfectly to race plan, showing patience in the early running before taking his chance to put a lap on the field, and then taking his chances from that point.
Gough won two of the last three sprints and was second in the other to climb above his rivals to claim victory.
Gough finished on 42 points to head off early leader Nikolai Ilichev from Russia on 38 points and Edgar Stepanyan from Armenia on 32.
He becomes the first New Zealand male to win a points race title at the juniors world championship and the first Kiwi to win a gold medal since the exploits of current world and Commonwealth Games sprint champions Sam Webster and Ethan Mitchell (with Cam Karwowski) in 2009.
This is only the eighth gold medal by a New Zealand rider since 1976.
Gough's medal follows a bronze in the team pursuit on the first day and his silver medal in the individual pursuit.
