The chair of Transparency International in Papua New Guinea says there was always a feeling that university student leaders would cop the blame for disturbances on campus.

The comment from Lawrence Stephens comes as student leaders at the University of PNG in Port Moresby were told that they were permanently terminated from all courses, as the academic year resumes this week.

UPNG studies were suspended in July after a series of disruptions at the Waigani campus amid a six-week boycott of classes by students in protest against  their demand that prime minister Peter O'Neill stand aside to face fraud allegations.

Mr Stephens told Johnny Blades that the Student Representative Council had conducted its boycott peacefully before the police move to open fire on students on campus in June brought everything to a head.
