    In a feud between the Scottish families of Ravenswood and Lammermoor, Enrico has gained the upper hand over Edgardo, killing his kinsmen and taking over his estates. While Edgardo is away on a secret diplomatic mission, Enrico, having learned that his sister Lucia is in love with Edgardo, uses forged letters to make her believe that Edgardo has been unfaithful. Enrico then forces her into a marriage with Lord Arturo Bucklaw that will greatly benefit their family. In front of the wedding guests, Lucia has just signed the marriage contract when Edgardo appears and denounces her. Will Lucia resign herself to a loveless fate, or will she take her revenge, even if it drives her to madness?
