1:15 Iconic Ollies eatery handed to the next generation

The founders of Ollies Burgers & Ice Cream shop in Royal Oak are handing over their scoops after 50 years. Colin and Carolyn Haines opened the American-style diner on Valentine's Day in 1978.

To the relief of many loyal Ollies ice cream fans, the business is staying in the family after being sold to the duo's son and daughter in law. Colin looks back on 50 years at their iconic Auckland destination.

1:25 Celebrating the future of design at University of Auckland

The University of Auckland's annual Creative Futures Exhibitions kick off today and are on through to Sunday.

The exhibition features work by students graduating in Architecture, Urban Design, Urban Planning, Fine Arts and Design.

On show is Design student Fiona Yoon's prototype ARctive that uses artificial intelligence and augmented reality to help seniors enhance their well-being.

She recently won a Lexus Design Award and $4,000 for the project. Her project will now be entered into an international design award. Fiona speaks to Jesse.

1.30 New NZ-made plane to save lives in natural disasters

New Zealand's only commercial aircraft manufacturing company has built a new plane to save lives during natural disasters and fight fires. It's called the SuperPac XSTOL (Extremely Short Take-Off and Landing) aircraft.

It can take off and land with just a rugged, 200-metre-long runway, and has been sold to 28 countries, including places in Africa where it's used with the United Nations World Food Programme.

1:40 Dead Book Birds on tour - a literary trio on stage

In addition to releasing his latest book, The Dead Are Always Laughing At Us, Dominic Hoey has teamed up with fellow poets and authors Liam Jacobson and Isla Huia to present a five date show around the motu.

Dominic and Liam join Jesse in the studio to talk about their book releases this year and what their audiences can expect from the talented trio live on stage.
