1:15 Lower Hutt Planting for the Future initiative

A new community-wide initiative has launched in Lower Hutt today called 'Mouri Tupu - Planting for the Future'.

The goal is to plant one tree for every person in the city, that's 114,000.

Since Mayor Campbell Barry made that pledge in his 2022 campaign, 40,000 natives have been planted.

To keep track of progress an interactive map has gone up on the Hutt City website where locals can post and share their planting projects.

Lower Hutt Mayor Campbell Barry speaks to Jesse.

1.25 Back to the future with farm stays as an extra money earner option on rural properties

With the rise of accommodation services like Air BnB, holidayers have more choice than ever when looking for a unique place to stay.

Plus we could all use a little extra income at the moment, and for those living in rural areas a traditional farm stay could be a great way to do that.

Last week the Global Agritourism Network and AgritourismNZ ran a webinar which included people from 50 countries.

One of the presenters was Amber Tyrrell, who owns and operates Valley Views Glamping in Canterbury. She speaks to Jesse.

2:20 Made in NZ:  Vertical berry farming

Traditionally the strawberry growing season winds up around now.

The locally grown varieties disappear. Supermarket shelves fill up with expensive, but often dull tasting imports.

That is except for "counter seasonal" grower 26 Seasons. They're going to start harvesting in the next couple of weeks.

Their trick -  growing the plants, hydroponically in an old carpet dying factory.

Chief executive Grant Leach speaks to Jesse.

3:10 Thinking for yourself, an antidote to misinformation and conspiracy theories

Robin Reames was  raised to be a Republican housewife, growing up in a conservative home in Louisiana.

Her father had an unshakable view of the world, no matter what the facts.

She saw first hand at the dinner table, why conspiracy theories flourish and how misinformation spreads.

Now a professor at the University of Illinois-Chicago, Reames believes the antidote is straightforward; we need to learn to think for ourselves.

Her new book explains how. It's called  Ancient Art of Thinking For Yourself, The: The Power of Rhetoric in Polarized Times.
