Ex-police officers in Solomon Islands offer to help the government restore law and order

A group of ex-police officers in Solomon Islands says it wants to help the police to improve national security and law and order.

One of the group leaders, who does not want to be named, says all the group wants to do is help the police ensure law and order and combat lawlessness in the capital, Honiara.

He says as former police officers, his men are concerned that their former employer appears unable to deal with lawlessness and many crimes are still unsolved.

The group was responding to an earlier statement by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Wilfred Akao.

Mr Akao had said only the police are the legal authority responsible for national security and law and order in Solomon Islands.

He says while the formation of such a group is illegal, its members should discuss their plans with police if they really want to help the police improve national security and law and order in the country.
