Fiji police begin investigations into brutality claims

Fiji police says it is investigating allegations of police brutality against those held in custody.

Police spokesperson, Inspector Uniaisi Vuniaaga says they are being investigated by the Police Complaints division.

There have been two allegations of police brutality against people held in custody.

Inspector Vuniaaga says the officers involved are still on active duty despite the investigation.

"Due to the concern that has been raised, we have really taken it as a priority in our concern. No one has been suspended yet, but the investigation is still going on. If enough evidence are available, the police officer concerned will be charged and taken to court."
