A state of emergency at a government station on the Fiji island of Vunisea is to remain in place until the water supply is properly restored.
District officer, Josefa Kama, says two schools and a hospital are likely to stay closed for at least the next week due to the problems.
Mr Kama says the station was promised an upgrade of its water supply but this hasn't happened and people are frustrated and disappointed.
"Vunisea's water supply shortages is not a new thing. It has been an ongoing thing ever since there was an upgrading of the school and the hospital. And, I think it was the government and its planning process .. did not take this into consideration. And, I think it's about time it perhaps upgraded so that the station is fully supplied with water."
Mr Kama says the public works department is working on a bypass system because low pressure means the station's new tank is unable to be used.
The state of emergency means government services for the nearly 10,000 people of Kadavu have been temporarily suspended.
Mr Kama says doctors are prepared to deal with emergency cases and the police remain available.
