Vanuatu police want new group for re-interviewing commissioner hopefuls

4:09 pm on 9 August 2002

Vanuatu's Deputy Police Commissioner says the Government should form a new Police Services Commission, in the wake of a court ruling yesterday, quashing the appointment of Mael Apisai as Commissioner.

Mr Simon says the decision by the Supreme court to overturn the appointment was an historic day for Vanuatu.

He says it shows that senior officials cannot abuse their powers.

Mr Simon had laid a complaint over the appointment of Mr Apisai who was given the job despite not being among the original 12 candidates or on a shortlist of four.

The court ordered the 12 be re-interviewed and Mr Simon says it should be by a new commission uninvolved in the appointment of Mr Apisai.
