Warning of collapse of Fiji sugar industry

11:11 am on 28 August 2002

The managing director of the mostly state-owned Fiji Sugar Corporation says the sugar industry has collapsed.

Radio Fiji says John McFadden has warned that the day the government withdraws its financial support for the industry, it will shut down.

Mr McFadden says the only way to save the industry is to implement the restructure plan as soon as possible.

The chief executive of the Sugar Cane Growers Council, Jaganath Sami, says the majority of the stakeholders have approved the restructure proposal in principle.

But the Labour Party leader, Mahendra Chaudhry, who heads the National Farmers Union, says the restructure plan is not acceptable because it will work against the farmers and workers.
