The former Fiji prime minister, Sitiveni Rabuka, has agreed to become the new secretry general of the Fijian Political Party, the SVT.
Mr Rabuka led the SVT as president when he was prime minister for much of the 1990s until the party's defeat in the 1999 general election.
The news comes soon after the former SVT leader, Filipe Bole, and other members left the party to form the multi-racial Fiji Democratic Party.
Mr Rabuka says he has no grudges against those who have left the party.
He says the SVT vision is to build a united, just and progressive society committed to a collective future where all communities can live in peace and security, and have fair and equitable opportunities.
Mr Rabuka says this vision allows the party to work with other like minded parties and he will do his best to forge links which will allow the SVT tobe a partner in this endeavour.
He has called on all who agree with the SVT to avoid extremism and join middle ground efforts for national reconciliation.
