New Caledonia's Goro nickel project resumes

11:38 am on 5 November 2002

The Goro Nickel company in New Caledonia says it has resumed construction work which it had suspended two months ago.

The company says it will continue with perparations of the site and its port which are part of a 1-point-4 billion US dollar project.

Last month, the company's head said that by 2005 the plant would produce 54-thousand tonnes of nickel and more than 5-thousand tonnes of cobalt.

Work at the site was suddenly abandoned in September, with the company blaming its action on a minor blockade by some disgruntled locals.
