Government nominates Tuivaga for International Criminal Court

6:33 pm on 5 November 2002

Womens groups in Fiji have criticised the government over its nomination of the former Chief Justice, Sir Timoci Tuivaga, to be a judge on the International Criminal Court based in the Hague.

The Coordinator of the Fiji Womens' Rights Movement, Virisili Buadromo says the government's nomination of Sir Timoci will damage the country's reputation.

Ms Buadromo says the Women's Rights Movement has been lobbying for the nomination of High Court Judge, Justice Nazhat Shameem because of her impeccable reputation both locally and internationally.

Ms Buadromo says Sir Timoci's nomination will receive little support from the international community.

"His involvement in the abrogation of the 1997 constitution, makes it a lot harder for him to be supported by other countries.....these international committees which appoint judges on to the international criminal courts are going to research every single nominee and if they find that any nominee is not squeaky clean, the likelihood of that person being appointed is going to be a total waste of time for fiji."

Nominations of judges on the ICC close on November 30 and elections will be held in February.
