Fiji army officer found guilty misusing public money

Fiji's military has dismissed a senior officer and jailed him for four years for misusing 41 thousand US dollars of public money.

Major Netani Vunidaiga pleaded guilty to four counts of larceny by a servant and one count of scandalous conduct before a military cout martial.

The court was told that the officer had committed the offences while he was the Fiji contingent commander of the United Nations Transitional Administration Forces in East Timor.

The money was intended to purchase building materials for the Fiji soldiers but Major Vunidaiga used it in a get-rich-quick Nigerian scam.

The discrepancy was discovered when he was replaced by a new contingent commander.
