Positive indicators for Niue's tourism industry

Niue's Premier, Young Vivian, says early tourist bookings for this year are an indication of the country's growing reputation as a safe holiday destination.

Mr Vivian says this is despite last December's problems caused by Polynesian Airlines overbooking its flights from Auckland to Apia via Niue which left passengers stranded in Alofi.

He says the airline problems have now been resolved and the advance tourist bookings are a good sign for the developing tourism industry which he hopes will be a main revenue earner for the country.

"Things are moving very, very well, things will improve. In Christmas we had many, many tourists and many of our people came back and I was just sounding out other people in the tourist industry and they told me that the bookings have just beginning to come in. It looks very healthy next season."

Young Vivian says the bookings show good numbers for return and first time visitors.

He says this excludes the number of expatriates returning to Niue.
