An assessment by the oil company, ExxonMobil, says Papua New Guinea's main Highlands Highway is the highest-risk route in the Asian Pacific region.
The Post Courier reports the head of ExxonMobil's PNG operations, John Acraman, as saying the assessment had forced the company to stop supplying fuels to the Highlands.
Mr Acraman says his company is currently running down its stocks in PNG's most populous region and expects that other oil companies to supply its former customers.
He says the deteriorating state of the Highlands Highway has jeopardised the safety of Exxon employees, contractors and customers.
Mr Acraman says the highway has been subject to numerous vehicle accidents and equipment thefts over the years .
He says ExxonMobil had been activily pursuing alternative fuel transport arrangements to supply the Highlands market but without success.
