10:32 am on 23 June 2003

A one-day meeting is to be held in Sydney next Monday of regional foreign ministers to discuss an Australian intervention plan for Solomon Islands.

The plan is to send more foreign police, possibly backed by military force, to Guadalcanal to restore law and order and also to take over the running of the country's finances.

The proposal is on the agenda of the New Zealand cabinet today and is to be discussed by the Australian government's national security committee on Wednesday before Monday's talks with foreign ministers from Pacific Island countries which are expected join the force.

The Solomon Islands parliament is due to meet in two weeks to discuss the plan which is estimated to cost about 60 million US dollars a year.
