PNG Auditor general presents damning audit

A report by the Papua New Guinea Auditor General has revealed the Government paid over 225 thousand US dollars of Treasury Secretary Koiari Tarata's medical bill in Australia in late 2001.

Mark Wani's report tabled in parliament yesterday shows the payment was made without detailed explanation from the Treasury despite repeated requests that it do so.

The National newspaper says Mr Wani's report on the audit of the Treasury accounts for 2000 and 2002 show the expenditure was considered illegitimate and needed to be fully recovered.

The report also cited instances of gross abuse of vehicles, vehicle allowances, travel allowances and entertainment expenses amounting to tens of thousands of dollars.

The Auditor General said despite Mr Tarata's long service at senior levels and his eligibility for insurance cover as head of department, he was unable to pass in audit that these payments were in order.
