The United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan has commended Pacific Island countries for their collective support to restore law and order in Solomon Islands.

Mr Annan has also voiced hope that a prompt return to normalcy will facilitate a peace-building process.

In a statement from the UN, Mr Annan said he recognises the particular importance of the unanimous support for this concerted regional intiative undertaken within the framework of the Pacific Island Forum's Biketawa Declaration.

The statement said Mr Annan would like to emphasise the UN system is fully prepared to contribute actively to any peace-building process.
