Independent observers to monitor PNG by-election

Independent observers are to watch voting in Papua New Guinea's Abau by election, which starts today and runs for a week.

The Acting Electoral Commissioner, Andrew Trawen, announced that observers from AusAID, Transparency International and the Australian Electoral Commission, will take part.

The election will be the first to be conducted under the Limited Preferential Voting system.

LPV was promoted by Transparency International and allows voters to rank three preferred candidates.

The Abau by election comes after Kilroy Genia, who held the seat going into last year's national elections, appealed against the election of Dr Puka Temu
