Tuvalu without power for third day

3:12 pm on 27 January 2004

Tuvalu remains without power after an incident involving a high voltage cable at the weekend.

The secretary to the government, Panapasi Nelesoni, says an investigation has been launched into what happened.

"It has been alleged that when they laid the telecom cables the workers may have caused some damage to the cables. We'll be doing an investigation into that."

Mr Nelesoni says all the homes, businesses, government offices and radio station in the southern half of the atoll of Funafuti are all without power.

People are getting water from tanks and cooking on kerosene stoves.
