Tonga reports decline in dengue infections

2:28 pm on 14 April 2004

Health authorities in Tonga say the incidence of dengue fever has fallen dramatically because of a major public awareness campaign.

Tonga suffered an epidemic of the mosquito-borne disease last year, with 1500 cases and six deaths.

The chief medical officer of public health, Dr Malakai Ake, says while the disease was at its peak this time last year, there have been only 16 cases and two deaths so far this year.

Dr Ake says although there is no control over visitors to Tonga, an anti-dengue campaign has greatly reduced infection rates

"If they come into Tonga and they bring the dengue virus, the only thing that we can do is for Tonga to make sure that the mosquito population is at its minimum. And also for the people to use mosquito nets, mosquito repellents, mosquito coils so the chance of getting mosquito bites is less. And that's what we did and we managed to control it."

Dr Ake says Tonga's management of the disease has not been matched by Fiji or New Caledonia.
