The Solomon Islands government says a proposed new framework it wants to establish with Taiwan would strengthen the two countries relationship.
The permanent secretary for Foreign Affairs, Peter Forau, says there are a number of issues it wants included in discussions, including ongoing assistance and investment.
He says the prime minister, Sir Allan Kemakeza, has already written to Taiwan's president, Chen Shui Bian, about the proposed framework which would replace a six-year old existing agreement.
Mr Forau says economic reform and reconstruction are priorities.
"Any new initiatives like the possibility of a framework will obviously strengthen our relationships. And, might bring in new possibilities for Solomon islands in terms of increased investments and economic benefits for the country."
Mr Forau says they are waiting to hear back from Taiwan on the possibility of discussions.
