Clean-up in CNMI continues after Tingting destruction

3:53 pm on 1 July 2004

Residents of the Northern Mariana Islands are cleaning up after the passage of Typhoon Tingting.

The Saipan Tribune newspaper reports more than 200 houses have been damaged or destroyed by the storm which hit the island chain on Monday.

Heavy rain flooded five wards at the Commonwealth Health Centre in Saipan and the medical supply building nearby was also hit.

And the search is continuing off Guam for five kayakers who've been missing since Tuesday.

The Pacific Daily News newspaper reports five employees of Guam Seawalker Tours were out paddling in order to clean up their pontoon, but were caught in heavy seas generated by the passing of Tingting on Monday.
