Fiji court martial jails more mutineers

9:25 am on 7 August 2004

The military court martial of a second group of 21 Fiji soldiers found guilty of the November 2000 mutiny has sentenced them to prison for terms of three to six years.

Handing down the sentences, the president of the court martial, Colonel Matareti Sarasau, said of the army that, "the people of this nation and the international community saw this once respected institution, reduced to a group of disgruntled men."

Col Sarasau said those men didn't think twice before killing and maiming their fellow comrades.

Col Sarasau said Fiji's military was now tainted with mutiny and had murderers and traitors among its ranks.

The mutiny was aimed at assassinating the commander, Commodore Bainimarama, and freeing the coup front man George Speight.

It resulted in eight deaths and more than 30 injuries.
