A New Zealand academic has given his backing to suggestions that Nauru could save money by withdrawing from some international organisations.
A development studies Professor at Victoria University in Wellington, Vijay Naidu, was commenting on a series of tough economic moves recommended for Nauru by Australian economist, Helen Hughes.
He says he has sympathy for suggestions that Nauru should withdraw from all international organisations except the Pacific Island Forum and the South Pacific Community.
"A large number of pacfic island communities don't send representatives at all, even in situations where the representation is funded. And this is because these people, the number of people that manage an office within the island countries, is so limited and if they were allowed to attend all these international conferences that are going on at any given time, then there wouldn't be anyone at home to provide the services that they were originally appointed for."
