Civil Defense in the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas say that nearly 900 have been made homeless by Typhoon Chaba which swept between Rota and Tinian islands at the weekend.
The storm brought heavy rain, and winds of up to 240 kilometres per hour, causing widespread destruction.
It took out power services, uprooted trees and destroyed hundreds of houses.
Most of the homeless are on Saipan with others on Rota and Tinian.
A civil defense official says the wrecked houses were mostly substandard wood and tin structures.
The homeless are in temporary shelters and the Northern Marianas' Government is working with the US Federal Government on plans to restore the housing.
