Latest typhoon may miss the Northern Marianas

3:34 pm on 1 September 2004

Weather forecasters in the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas have classified a storm in the area as a supertyphoon.

But within the past two hours, the governor of Saipan has given the all clear to residents after forecasters predicted the storm would veer away from the territory.

The storm was thought to be on course for the Northern Marianas, prompting residents to flee to underground shelters.

Fears were raised of a repeat of the damage wrought by supertyphoon Chaba last week.
