The Fijian Political Party, the SVT, wants Sitiveni Rabuka to remain as its president.
The Fiji Sun reports that the SVT's management board has refused to accept Mr Rabuka's resignation which he handed in last month.
The SVT's general secretary, Ema Druavesi, says the management board has unanimously agreed that Mr Rabuka should continue as president after all branches throughout Fiji indicated their support for him.
Mrs Druavesi says the SVT has been doing a lot of work at the grassroots level and receiving such a positive response that they believe they will be back in government in 2006 with Mr Rabuka as prime minister.
When Mr Rabuka resigned he said he would agree to become Fiji's ambassador to the United States if the government nominated him.
The foreign affairs minister has sent Mr Rabuka's name to Washington but the State Department has not indicated its approval yet.
