3:54 pm on 9 November 2004

Palau's president, Tommy Remengesau, is expected to retain his position with double the lead of his challenger after the release of preliminary election results.

Mr Remengesau has 6260 votes, to opponent Polycarp Basilius, with 3180.

But, the vice-president, Sandra Pierantozzi, is behind the newcomer Camsek Chin, by almost four thousand votes.

Ms Pierantozzi has conceded and says she will now do other things.

"Kinda relieved of public responsibilities, and for a long time I've had to put my business plans and projects on the back burner. So Im looking forward to going back to the private life, and hopefully working for myself and not have to answer to anybody."

Sandra Pierantozzi.

Absentee ballots close today and final results will be known next week.
