A Taiwanese newspaper is reporting that Vanuatu will appoint an ambassador to Taiwan this week despite having diplomatic ties with China.

The Taipei times quotes the Prime Minister's spokesman, Kal Moli, who says Vanuatu is still committed to Taiwan.

The Prime Minister, Serge Vohor, secretly negotiated the arrangement to recognise Taiwan during a trip to Taipei, but last week the Council of Ministers rejected the plan.

But Mr Moli said he was confident the Ministers would change their minds after further discussions.
