9:14 pm on 3 February 2005

Six Tongan women, all working for local community organisations in the island kingdom, are pitching themselves against 58 men in the national elections in March.

The women include a lawyer, a businesswoman, a community worker and a former teacher and a former magistrate.

Three of them, Fuiva Kavaliku, Alisi Fotu and Sela Lopa Kaisinga are standing in the Tongatapu constituency against at least 26 men, including the well known Akilisi Pohiva, Lopeti Senituli and former Police Minister, Clive Edwards.
