Common Cause in American Samoa back Auditor in spat with Congressman

4:31 pm on 11 February 2005

The American Samoan watch dog group, Common Cause, says it strongly supports and defends the efforts of the Territorial Audit Office and territorial auditor, George Webster.

The group, in a statement, accuses the territory's member of the US Congress, Faleomavaeaega Eni Hunkin, of bringing what it calls the stench of partisan politics into the fray.

Last week, the Congressman issued a statement criticising Mr Webster for asking the Interior Department to re-establish the office of the Comptroller of America Samoa.

Common Cause says Faleomavaega is uninformed or has another agenda if he does not know of the mismanagement and corruption in the Territory over the years.
