New Caledonia school closed over parent protest

Reports from New Caledonia say a college in the territory's north has been closed for nearly a week because some parents disagree with school policies.

The Nouvelles Caledoniennes newspaper says the college in Poindimie has been blockaded by a parents' association which has accused the school of doing too little for students with difficulties.

The association wants a new approach but the school management has ruled out changes, saying subjects such as music, art and physical education cannot be dropped if a student has problems with maths or French.

The school's deputy principal has told the paper that he wonders if there is another reason behind the parents' action, saying it may be linked to a school staffing issue.
