Fiji police reject claims force practised selective justice

A report in Fiji says the police have refuted allegations made by the junior partner in the governing coalition that the force practised selective justice and prosecution.

The pro-coup Conservative Alliance Matanitu Vanua party has accused the police of not doing enough to bring others involved in the 2000 coup to justice.

But the Assistant Police Commissioner of Crime, Kemueli Bulamainivalu has told Fijilive that the claims are nothing more than a campaign gimmick ahead of next year's election.

The party had said police were shying away from investigating military loyalists that had allegedly assaulted and killed rebel Counter Revolutionary Warfare Unit soldiers in custody during the coup.

Commissioner Bulamainivalu said investigations had been delayed because two loyalist soldiers implicated in the case had been away on a peacekeeping mission.
